The dissolved oxygen sensor is an interchangeable sensor that works with HOBO MX800 Series Water Loggers to measure dissolved oxygen and temperature.
The DO sensor can be attached directly to the fully submersible MX801 model, or attached via cable to the direct read MX802 model, which doesn’t require having to pull the sensor out of the water to download data.
When this sensor is connected to a HOBO MX800 logger that also has a conductivity or CTD sensor attached, the logger can record salinity-adjusted DO directly. With this sensor attached to the HOBO MX802 direct read model, the logger can calculate DO percent saturation directly. When used with fully submersible HOBO MX801 model, a barometric logger data file (from either an MX802 or MX2001 logger) is needed to calculate DO percent saturation, for post-processing in the HOBOconnect app. In waters with changing salinity, the logger must also have a salinity sensor attached or you will need an MX800 salinity data file to get DO percent saturation.

Power Output: Set to use available battery power over the required transmitter life.
Housing: The transmitter and battery are encapsulated in an inert waterproof epoxy. Battery placement determines shape. Several mounting options are available (see below). Although the unit is usually glued to the animal (click here for gluing instructions), one or two tubes can be attached for the passage of sutures or harness material (click here for harnessing instructions). Tubes will increase the total weight by 0.05 to 0.1 g. The unit can be attached to a bird leg-band (supplied by researcher). Extra potting is required for implanted transmitters, for use in high ionic environments (e.g. alkaline, saline), for extra waterproofing, or for abrasion resistance where needed. This will add ~0.1 g.
Examples of tube placement: Tubes will slightly increase length and weight (0.05 – 0.10g) of the finished transmitter.
![]() |
One anterior tube for a light harness or belt.
One center tube for a light harness or belt.
Two tubes (anterior and posterior) for sutures or harness material.
Two pairs of vertical tubes and molded longitudinal groove for single feather tail-mount attachment. |
Antenna: A stranded stainless steel wire covered with a black or brown nylon coating, or a 0.18mm (0.007″) stainless steel wire. Shrinkable tubing can be added to reinforce the base of the antenna. Helical antennas can be added to allow for implantation (see photos below).
Helical Antenna Configurations: All of the sizes listed above can be fitted with helical antennas to allow for implantation. This will add ~0.1g to the finished weight and 2mm to the height (Internal Helix) or 10mm to the length (External Helix). Please note: Due to the reduction in reception range, this configuration should only be used in cases where a subcutaneous antenna is not possible. There are two available options:
![]() |
Internal Helix (suffix “H”): In this configuration, the helical antenna is placed across the top of the unit and encapsulated within the potting material. Range under normal conditions: 50-100m.
External Helix (suffix “HX”): In this configuration, the helical antenna is coiled around a 10mm piece of Tygon tubing, which extends beyond the back of the unit. Range under normal conditions: 100 – 200m. |
Activation: Removing an external magnet starts the transmitter. Replacing the magnet stops the transmitter.
Aditional Options:
Position (suffix “P”): The pulse rate switches from ~24 ppm in a vertical position to ~50 ppm in a horizontal position. This option adds ~0.5g to the finished weight of the transmitter.
Temperature (suffix “T”): An increase or decrease in temperature results in a corresponding increase or decrease in pulse rate. At the standard settings, the pulse rate changes from ~25 ppm at 0°C to ~40 ppm at 40°C. Each transmitter is supplied with a plotted calibration curve. This option adds ~0.05g to the finished weight of the transmitter.

The Integrating Water Sampler IWS III is a light and handy instrument for the acquisition of summing (integrated) water samples according to the EU-WFD (European Water Framework Directive). The integrated sample is automatically achieved in one single draft. There is no need for repeated operations of standard water samplers, followed by mixing procedures.
The sampling technique is very simple. An electric motor actuates a piston inside a transparent tube. A microprocessor controls the sampling procedure according to the pre-selected depth, time or spot scenario. A built-in high precision pressure sensor cares for accurate depth measurements. Power supply of the sampler is made by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, using the safest chemistry currently available.

ICES standard for phytoplankton primary production measurements.
One of the most important marine processes is the formation of organic material resulting from the interaction of carbon dioxide, water and sunlight, a process known as photosynthesis. The ability to measure this process is of great importance when assessing marine pelagic systems. In practice the best way to measure photosynthesis is to look at the absorption of carbon dioxide. The high sensitivity of carbon dioxide absorption measurements allows to use this method under all circumstances. Neither low or very high algal concentrations nor low light conditions and low temperatures are restrictions for this method.
Based on the 14C method, using the absorption of the radio-active 14C isotope of carbon (Steemann-Nielsen, 1952), the ICES Incubator is the ICES standard for phytoplankton primary production measurements. The incubator shown here has been mainly developed for monitoring purposes. It should be used preferably for water samples taken from a mixed water layer with a fixed temperature. Measurements of the amount of phytoplankton (based on chlorophyll-a concentration measurements) should be carried out for interpretation purposes.
The ICES Incubator consists of an illuminated transparent plexiglass tank incorporating a turning wheel on which 12 experimental bottles can be clamped. The tank is filled with water which is set in motion by an adjustable circulating pump. Thus the turning wheel is set in rotation at speeds up to 10 rpm with the experimental bottles acting as paddles. Tank connections for a second water circulation allow for temperature adjustments of the water by using external tempering equipment.
The 12 experimental bottles of 50 ml capacity each have different optical coatings, so that each bottle has individual transmission rates and thus generating a number of 12 different irradiance (or light intensity) levels. The illumination unit is equipped with 10 fluorescent tubes with a wave spectrum according to ICES specifications, each can be switched individually. For higher irradiance levels a second illumination unit can be mounted onto the ground plate of the ICES Incubator.

The Improved Prokopack Aspirator Model 1419 was developed for indoor sampling of resting mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti, anophelines, and Culex. Aspiration of resting adults produce collections of both sexes and all physiological stages directly from their resting sites, allowing better estimations of species diversity, abundance, sex ratio, age structure, and physiological status (Silver 2008). At 23 ounces (650 g) it is light weight and highly maneuverable; with the included extension pole the unit can sample from ground level up to 13 feet (4 m). This enables collections to be made on upper walls, ceilings, and under furniture. Also included with the 1419 is (1) a 12 volt 12 amp hr gelled-electrolyte battery, the extension pole, six collection cups and lids with stainless steel mosquito mesh, a universal voltage (input 100-250 VAC, 50/60 Hz) automatic charger with an output of 5.0 amps per hr) permitting complete recharging in 2.5 hours. Run time is four hours.
Our Prokopack aspirator incorporates several significant improvements to the original design. By optimizing the air flow we have improved intake air speed by 15%, reduced current consumption by 33% and thereby increased run time between battery recharging to four hours.
Using the supplied 12 volt 12 amp hr battery will provide the performance indicated below; the darker line is for the standard (mosquito) mesh screen in the collection cup, the lighter line reflects the fine mesh sandfly screen collection cup:
