The design and testing of our new Battery-Powered Mosquito and Sandfly Aspirator (PN 419) was completed in April of 2018. This aspirator can be used to move mosquitoes and sandflies between cages, etc., in the laboratory; it can be used to conduct human landing rate counts in the field. Suction is provided by an electronics cooling which operates at 5-6 VDC. The fan is quiet (<15 dB) and has sophisticated locked-rotator burnout protection. This aspirator has a two-speed fan giving intake air flows of 4.8 and 6.2 m/sec. The collection chambers are 7-dram vials fitted with fine mesh stainless steel cloth for air flow and snap-on lids are included with the aspirator. The polycarbonate intake tube is 8 inches (20.3 cm) long with an ID of 0.375 inches (1.0 cm). The aspirator comes with a waterproof battery case and will require four alkaline AA batteries (batteries not included). The aspirator (PN: 419) also includes a set of alligator leads so the unit can be powered using any size or type of battery, e.g., our 6 VDC 12 Amp Hr gel cell (PN: 2.30) or our Waterproof 4-D cell Battery Holder (PN: 1.50). Also included is an extension cord 6 feet (or 1.8 meters) in length and a universal power supply that can operate on 100-240 VAC and 50/60 Hz mains. All connections use 5.5/2.1 mm barrel fittings.

The CDC UpDraft Blacklight (UV) Trap Model 1312 was developed from a design of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. In field tests in Central America, it caught several times more Anopheline mosquitoes than standard CDC Miniature or New Jersey light traps, making it a superior sampling tool.
The utility of blacklight (UVA) in attracting a greater number and diversity of mosquito species, Culicoides, and Phlebotomines is well known. Our UV traps employ a 4-watt blue-blacklight tube and a very efficient transistorized inverter-ballast to provide radiation in the near-UV range (ca. 320-420 nm), ensuring maximum attraction.

The Improved Prokopack Aspirator Model 1419 was developed for indoor sampling of resting mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti, anophelines, and Culex. Aspiration of resting adults produce collections of both sexes and all physiological stages directly from their resting sites, allowing better estimations of species diversity, abundance, sex ratio, age structure, and physiological status (Silver 2008). At 23 ounces (650 g) it is light weight and highly maneuverable; with the included extension pole the unit can sample from ground level up to 13 feet (4 m). This enables collections to be made on upper walls, ceilings, and under furniture. Also included with the 1419 is (1) a 12 volt 12 amp hr gelled-electrolyte battery, the extension pole, six collection cups and lids with stainless steel mosquito mesh, a universal voltage (input 100-250 VAC, 50/60 Hz) automatic charger with an output of 5.0 amps per hr) permitting complete recharging in 2.5 hours. Run time is four hours.
Our Prokopack aspirator incorporates several significant improvements to the original design. By optimizing the air flow we have improved intake air speed by 15%, reduced current consumption by 33% and thereby increased run time between battery recharging to four hours.
Using the supplied 12 volt 12 amp hr battery will provide the performance indicated below; the darker line is for the standard (mosquito) mesh screen in the collection cup, the lighter line reflects the fine mesh sandfly screen collection cup:

The New Standard Model 1012 Miniature Incandescent Light Trap offers 100% light output and maximum airflow for superior capture results. Its built-in programmable photosensor allows you to control any combination of motor and/or light on/off at dusk and dawn, making this trap a versatile and efficient tool for your mosquito and sandfly studies.
NOTE: Batteries are not included. Sold separately.
The Model 1012 trap emits 75% more light than any other incandescent trap on the market. Its new ABS rain shield and clear acrylic body reflect and transmit light downward and outward. The photosensor delivers 100% of the battery voltage to the light and motor, meaning the bulb produces bright white light as designed, not a dim yellowish glow.
By delivering 100% of the battery voltage, the motor RPMs are approximately 20% higher than in other miniature light traps. Together with our low-profile grill, airflow is substantially greater than other models.
The built-in photosensor can control any combination of motor and/or light on/off at dusk and dawn. You can program the trap into different modes without the need for small tools and without jumpers that can be lost.

The Automatic DC-DC Buck/Boost Power Supply – Model 8.INT is designed to allow the use of any 5 to 30 volt power source in our battery-operated traps. It is ideal for projects in remote areas, such as malaria control programs in Africa, where 12V motorcycle batteries and chargers are readily available, avoiding the high cost and logistics of shipping 6V gel batteries.
This converter supports alkaline D-Cell batteries, sealed lead-acid batteries of 6 or 12 volts, and Li-ion batteries, always maintaining the optimal voltage required by the trap. When used with a Model 1012 trap at 12V, power consumption is only 0.16 A/h, allowing a 90 Ah deep-cycle battery to keep the trap running for over 550 hours, equivalent to 45-50 cycles of 12 hours.

The 6-Meter Standard Malaise Trap Model 3012 is a flight interception trap with dual wet/dry collection heads. The traps were originally developed by Drs. Gressitt and Gressitt (An improved malaise trap, 1962. Pacific Insects, 4:87-90) and we have been selling this trap for over 20 years worldwide. The fabric is sun-resistant polyester and all seams are double or triple stitched.
Where the trap is placed is not solely determined by what you intend to catch. Consider natural flight paths, for example, along the edges of fields and paths within forests. If applicable, place the trap perpendicular to the direction of flight, e.g., butterfly migration or the diurnal movement of mosquitoes to and from a wooded area (particularly see Gressitt & Gressitt 1962). Remember, the trap will catch good numbers anywhere, but moving it every few days will reveal better spots than others for a particular genus or species. A trap placed in a shaded area will collect more if one or both collecting chambers are placed in sunlight or towards the light part of the horizon. The instructions also provide references on how to bait the trap, e.g., CO2 for biting flies.
The optional alcohol heads are interchangeable and are constructed of acrylic and stainless steel. The heads withstand the use of isopropyl alcohol, which is commonly used to kill the insects before the specimens are damaged. The catch is removed by unscrewing the bottles hung beneath the angled collection heads.
