These nets are made in Japan, the highest quality in mist nets. Japanese nets are still the best mist nets available today.

Mist nets are used by ornithologists and bat biologists to capture them in the wild, whether for banding or other research projects. These mist nets are made of nylon Denier/Ply 70/2, 4 pockets, mesh size 30 (15x15 mm), with UV protection. These references have a height of 2.6m, so you can install one over another to achieve a 5.2m system.

We suggest using poles for mist nets to avoid cutting trees in full growth.

The term "denier" is used in the textile industry. It's defined as the weight in grams of 9000 meters of thread. For example, a denier of 70 means that 9000 meters weigh 70 grams. Lower denier values result in a more delicate mist net, but it's less visible to the animal. You can find mist nets with denier values ranging from 50 to 210, where 70 to 100 is ideal for small and medium-sized birds, and 50 to 75 is ideal for bats. "Ply" refers to the number of filaments in a thread used to make a net. Mist nets are usually made of two threads, referred to as multifilament. A mist net with Denier/Ply 70/2 is made with two threads, each with a Denier of 70.

The Automatic DC-DC Buck/Boost Power Supply – Model 8.INT is designed to allow the use of any 5 to 30 volt power source in our battery-operated traps. This converter supports alkaline D-Cell batteries, sealed lead-acid batteries of 6 or 12 volts, and Li-ion batteries, always maintaining the optimal voltage required by the trap. When used with a Model 1012 trap at 12V, power consumption is only 0.16 A/h, allowing a 90 Ah deep-cycle battery to keep the trap running for over 550 hours, equivalent to 45-50 cycles of 12 hours.

The Kestrel 2500 takes the great features of the Kestrel 2000 and adds in a pressure sensor. Predict fish and wildlife activity as well as when bad weather is headed your way with the three-hour pressure trend indicator. With its easy-to-use digital pressure altimeter, you have the perfect instrument for any outdoor activity - get conditions in seconds right in the palm of your hand. In addition to predicting weather activity, barometric pressure also influences a bullet’s trajectory, which is why the Kestrel 2500 is used by shooters and hunters when accuracy is important.

Note: The Kestrel 2500 in Olive Drab with NV has a night-vision preserving backlight which helps users to sustain natural night vision. The NV's backlight incorporates an optical filter to reduce overall brightness and minimize blue and green spectrum light to preserve night vision. Additionally, NV backlights are also much dimmer than a standard backlight, making it more difficult to detect with the naked eye in night operations. This backlight appears soft greyish pink, not red, and is still in the visible spectrum, so it is not compatible with night-vision equipment.

It takes 30 to 45 minutes for the average eye to adapt to darkness and maximize night vision. Even a short burst of white, yellow, green or blue light “bleaches out” the rod cell photoreceptors in the eye and causes night blindness until the entire adaptation process can take place again. Light in the red spectrum does not cause this “bleaching out”, preventing night blindness and night vision fatigue.

The Kestrel 5000 Pocket Weather Meter is the basic wind and weather meter of the Kestrel 5000 series. While the Kestrel 5000 Pocket Weather Meter offers similar wind and weather monitoring functions to the Kestrel 3500 Wind Meter, it has several advantages, such as Bluetooth connectivity, data storage, graphical functions, and computer interface technology. It can store up to 10,000 data points, allowing you to track changes in the environment over time, view these changes as graphs on your Kestrel 5000 screen, and even upload the data to your PC or Mac. The Kestrel 5000 series is now available with optional Bluetooth LINK technology, enabling your Kestrel to communicate with your Android or iOS device up to 100 feet away, maximizing the battery life of your weather meter.

Each Bluetooth-enabled meter includes custom communication software designed to quickly and easily set your data transmission frequency, download logged data, view graphical data, and transfer data to other applications.

As with all Kestrel 5000 series meters, they feature a white backlight (excellent for daytime use) and a night vision-preserving backlight. The red night vision backlight (NV) incorporates an optical filter to reduce overall brightness and minimize blue and green light in the spectrum to preserve night vision. (Note: this backlight appears as soft grayish pink, not "red," and is still in the visible spectrum, so it is not compatible with night vision equipment.) Essentially, with the red backlight, your eyes do not need to adjust when switching between your meter and the horizon during nighttime use.

Couple this Portable Vane Mount with a Kestrel 4500 Pocket Weather Tracker (the 4500 tracks wind direction) and you have a data logging weather station, capable of tracking changes in the wind direction and speed, then tracking them with your data point memory log.

The Vane Mount attaches easily to the Kestrel Portable Tripod (or any tripod) to add directional measurement capabilities to your Kestrel Meter.

For those measuring wind direction (using the Kestrel 4500), the unit should be pointed so the back is facing the direction from which the wind is coming. (see the photo)
