The Plankton Net according to Apstein is a cornerstone of modern limnological investigation. This standardized, vertically operated net is specifically designed for qualitative studies of the water column. It features a high-grade 50 cm conical net bag attached to a 25 cm diameter stainless steel ring, ensuring a stable and reliable opening during deployment. Its hydrodynamic design allows researchers to capture representative biological samples with minimal disturbance.
A key feature of this system is the detachable net bucket, which facilitates easy sample retrieval. The bucket includes a weighted stainless steel ring for rapid vertical descent, a metal drain cock for precise sample release, and an integrated window covered with mesh fabric that matches the net bag. While the standard 55 µm mesh is ideal for phytoplankton, a wide range of sizes is available to suit specific research needs, from fine microplankton to larger zooplankton.

Based on the iconic Bogorov design, these zooplankton counting chambers have been engineered for the effortless enumeration of large quantities of zooplankton. A high-grade plexiglass block, featuring precision-machined grooves and a polished bottom, provides the best possible transparency for the detailed observation of microscopic life. Due to their compact dimensions, all chambers are perfectly suited for use with stereo microscopes, allowing for seamless integration into research laboratories and field studies focused on aquatic biodiversity.
The versatility of these instruments is fundamental to modern environmental science. Standard models are manufactured with meander-profile grooves, while the ballast water models, modified by Gollasch, are produced with pattern lines, bisected patterns, and grid layouts. These specialized configurations greatly ease the use of the chambers on moving vessels, enabling rigorous scientific work even in rough sea conditions, ensuring that the study of nature continues regardless of environmental challenges.

ICES standard for phytoplankton primary production measurements.
One of the most important marine processes is the formation of organic material resulting from the interaction of carbon dioxide, water and sunlight, a process known as photosynthesis. The ability to measure this process is of great importance when assessing marine pelagic systems. In practice the best way to measure photosynthesis is to look at the absorption of carbon dioxide. The high sensitivity of carbon dioxide absorption measurements allows to use this method under all circumstances. Neither low or very high algal concentrations nor low light conditions and low temperatures are restrictions for this method.
Based on the 14C method, using the absorption of the radio-active 14C isotope of carbon (Steemann-Nielsen, 1952), the ICES Incubator is the ICES standard for phytoplankton primary production measurements. The incubator shown here has been mainly developed for monitoring purposes. It should be used preferably for water samples taken from a mixed water layer with a fixed temperature. Measurements of the amount of phytoplankton (based on chlorophyll-a concentration measurements) should be carried out for interpretation purposes.
The ICES Incubator consists of an illuminated transparent plexiglass tank incorporating a turning wheel on which 12 experimental bottles can be clamped. The tank is filled with water which is set in motion by an adjustable circulating pump. Thus the turning wheel is set in rotation at speeds up to 10 rpm with the experimental bottles acting as paddles. Tank connections for a second water circulation allow for temperature adjustments of the water by using external tempering equipment.
The 12 experimental bottles of 50 ml capacity each have different optical coatings, so that each bottle has individual transmission rates and thus generating a number of 12 different irradiance (or light intensity) levels. The illumination unit is equipped with 10 fluorescent tubes with a wave spectrum according to ICES specifications, each can be switched individually. For higher irradiance levels a second illumination unit can be mounted onto the ground plate of the ICES Incubator.

The K-B Heavy Corer with Case is your specialized tool for collecting sediment and fauna samples in deep water, especially at the water-bottom interface. Its design, optimized for obtaining samples of mobile benthic organisms like Tubificidae, incorporates a valve that remains open during descent, preventing pressure waves that might alert fauna. The messenger-activated closure allows you to control exactly when to capture the sample. This heavy version offers better penetration into compact substrates and comes fully equipped with a messenger, a 100-foot line, a rigid carrying case, and a liner kit.

Use this sampler in slightly corrosive water, saltwater, or water with large amounts of suspended or sticky colloidal solids. Its wide mouth allows you to collect a true water sample without contamination from other water levels. During descent, the open mouth does not restrict water flow, making it particularly suitable for collecting plankton and floating sediments. You can order this versatile bottle in either transparent acrylic or opaque PVC. The PVC is more durable and less costly, while the acrylic allows you to view the sample contents immediately.
This sampler is not suitable for trace metal analysis (e.g., mercury or phosphorus) due to potential contamination from the materials in its structure. For precision chemical analysis, we recommend our Beta Bottle water samplers.
NOTE: Volume may vary slightly. We recommend that you confirm the exact volume of your bottle prior to each use.

Designed for you to use in shallow or deep waters, this sampler descends horizontally, parallel to the bottom. Just before closing, you pull it sideways, which ensures you get a truly representative water sample for that specific depth. It is ideal for sampling at the thermocline, other stratification levels, or just above the sediments. You can choose this versatile bottle in either transparent acrylic or opaque PVC. PVC is more durable, while acrylic allows you to view the sample immediately.
This sampler is excellent for near-shore trace metal sampling (up to 200 m), as no metal parts touch your sample, avoiding metallic ion contamination that can cause errors in algal assays or productivity studies. It features rigid, white plastic end seals and foam silicone gaskets for a clean, secure closure. Amber latex tubing, which does not leach metals, is used to close the bottle.
NOTE: Volume may vary slightly. We recommend that you verify the exact volume of your bottle prior to each use.
