Orange silica gel does not contain cobalt chloride; it is a completely non-toxic and contamination-free product. In 1998, the European Economic Community classified cobalt chloride as a Category 2 carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic by inhalation). Blue TSO silica gel contains 0.08% cobalt chloride, and although it can be safely used if handled according to safety standards, an alternative silica gel with a color-changing indicator was later developed to meet market demands.
The main ingredient is silicon dioxide, and the absence of cobalt chloride makes it a harmless and contamination-free product, while still retaining the signature color-changing property based on absorbed moisture. It is primarily used as a moisture-indicating absorbent in precision instruments, medical applications, gasoline chemical processing, food, clothing, leather, electrical devices, the gas industry, and more.
