The CDC Gravid Trap was meticulously designed by Dr. Paul Reiter of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to specifically target the collection of gravid Culex mosquitoes. It stands out for its effectiveness in capturing virus-positive mosquitoes, and its unique design minimizes issues associated with calculating minimum infection rates.

The trap employs a clever attraction strategy by incorporating a hay infusion in an oviposition tray. This infusion is made of 1 pound (0.5 kg) of hay mixed with 30 gallons (114 liters) of water and incubated for 5 days. Placed at least 1 hour before sunset at the desired location, the tray is filled with 1 gallon (4 liters) of this solution, attracting gravid females for subsequent capture.
